Tom Starling Senior and Junior visit 2008 Camp
At this years Annual Summer Camp I had the great pleasure of meeting Jiu Jitsu 8th Dan Tom Starling Senior and Jiu Jitsu 6th Dan Tom Starling Junior. The last time I saw Tom senior was in 1974, he was a great friend of my mother and father, it was good to talk over old times. All of us complained about the lack of people doing the Martial Arts, in the late 60's my father Nobby would have 2 weeks of juniors and two weeks of seniors with over a hundred on each week compare that with no one week and just 30 people. Tom Junior mentioned his father Jiu Jitsu grading at the Camp with my father being one of the examines I did not even realise my father had a grade in Jiu Jitsu, any rate Peter Schonewille (IBF Founder) matched Tom against a Dutch man, the Dutchman without warning smashed Tom in the face with his fist, Nobby was enraged but Schonewille said as a Jiu Jitsu Dan Grade he should have been ready. The grading started again but this time Tom was in first with a kick to his opponents testicles, one can understand why Full Out Jiu Jitsu Contest was stopped. Tom brought some old photo's from the original Camp at St Mary's Bay date about 1971:
