Just to remind you there is a meeting of all Judo Instructors/Coaches in January:
Dear Judo Coach/Instructor
Last year I introduced a 3rd Dan above Annual conference this was held in January and proved very successful, this will occur again next year on Sunday January 14th 2007 10am in Sittingbourne. This one-day event is compulsory to all IBF Judo Coaches/Instructors who wish to maintain their status and be eligible for Professional Identity Insurance. The day will consist of a discussion group where all of us can put our views forward, if you have some suggestions please let me know, also we will run through the Gokyo, Nage and Ju No Kata. The practical side will not necessarily be a chuck about affair, as I know some coaches have injuries. Like most associations we have to make sure that every Coach/Instructor is kept up to date and not allowed to practise inappropriate techniques also it is a requirement of my Insurance that all IBF Coach/Instructors teach in a safe legal way. The IBF will not insure any Judo Coach who cannot attend unless there is extenuating circumstances or they have equivalent coaching renewal in other sports or organisations
CRB Checks
These are required on an annual basis so nearly all of you need to renew, if you have a CRB with an other organisation which is more then 6 months old you will need to renew with the IBF/BCSA. Please remember to have a CRB check on anyone who has dealings with children. i.e. the person who collects money, the tea lady, senior players who arrive earlier and watch, parents who watch parents who help with mats. Those coaches who do not have a CRB check will not be allowed to Coach. At present we have a massive influx of illegal and legal immigrants who cannot be checked by the CRB so be very careful if you have a non British Subject wanting to be involved with children. I am not suggesting that all foreigners are dangerous but they have to be checked like everyone else if they refuse or cannot get a CRB check please do not let them have access to children, BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY.
Please send a Large SAE if you require CRB forms and please make sure they are filled in correctly
Each Club that has a Junior section must have Child Protection Officer someone who has attended a Child protection course also it recommended that all coaches have a First Aid certificate.
Claim against Cath Williams
Most of you will be aware that there is a claim of negligence against Cath in my opinion a very spurious one. I can not for obvious reasons go into the case but what I can say that Cath’s record keeping has been exemplary and I would suggest every coach apply what she has done:
1) She has records going back 8 years of who attended and if there was a problem, this can be useful if someone falsifies claims on how many lessons they have attended
2) She has videoed gradings and kept the tape, once again if there is a problem you have evidence.

She has also kept photographs
You will need to get written permission to take video and photographs if parents refuse I would refuse membership to them. Taking regular photographs of students dated, with there weight, height etc is very useful as people change especially children, a child at 12 is different to the same person at 18 and some of these cases can take a decade. All the do gooders keep on about the protection of the child (which is right) but must also look at the protection of the Coach and helper. The Blame Culture is rife in this country and there are people who will lie and cheat get something for nothing, sometimes helped by the legal profession.
Remember get you licence renewed on time, insurance is not back dated one day late one day without insurance
