IBF UK Judo Coaches Annual Seminar

IBF HQ Sittingbourne January 16th 2007

This the first time the IBF has allowed grades under 3rd Dan to attend as a lot of coaches were interested in putting their views across. The day started with a 2-hour discussion on various topics, the main ones being as follows:

1)      British Judo Association. This caused a lot of debate as the BJA has now accepted that they have no objections to BJA members belonging to other associations, several IBF members have joined them and taken the BJA Coaching award but all re-iterated their first loyalty is to the IBF. IBF President Martin Clarke said that it could only be a good thing that the two associations co-operate as both can feed of each other.

2)      Insurance was another issue raised by Derek Base he asked whether or not new club members had to join the IBF immediately, Martin said that it was impracticable to expect a new member to join immediately so after a couple of lessons would be more appropriate. Questions were also asked about visitors to the club Martin said they have to be insured, that is why the IBF recreational membership which for £12.50p covers insurance only.

3)      John Clarke complained that there was no format to the Senior Grading which was backed up by other members, Martin explained that the grid system which the IBF use treat Judo players as individual so that they develop as such, most felt this was to difficult a system to apply and wanted to go back to a more traditional style of grading based more on a rote learning formulae. He agreed reluctantly for the IBF to return to a traditional grading and appointed Trevor Davies 6th Dan, Greg Garside 4th Dan and John Clarke 4th Dan to devise a new syllabus.

4)      Martin also stated that he would like more people to become coaches and those existing coaches to advance to higher levels he reminded members that there was two system the “Practical Proficiency Award” and the “Coaching effective Programme”

5)      There will only be one Judo Dan grading this year and that will be at Summer camp on the last Saturday, candidates do not have to attend the course to take the Grading

The after noon saw Martin Clarke give a short lesson on rolling break fall and how to support someone when throwing them, he emphasised that beginners did not want to go to Judo to be brutalised they wanted enjoyment and vicious throws did not help.  Greg Garside and Trevor Davies going through Nage No Kata, Greg was asked last year to standardise the Kata, which he has done and this will be used throughout IBF England. Most agreed that they needed more time so a Nage no Kata course is being organised for April with Easter Saturday being considered. John Clarke and Colin Carrott then went through the whole of the Gokyo and once again it was suggested that they organise a course. Steve Jacobs has asked Greg and Trevor to come to Bedford to teach the Ju No Kata this date will be announced. BJA members will be invited to attend these courses.

Martin finished the seminar of by reminding everyone to get their licenses in on time “NO LICENCE NO INSURANCE”
