Strangles and Chokes Kata

Kata #5 consists of eleven strangle and choking techniques divided into two groups, where the techniques are executed while the opponent is in the standing position and while the opponent is in the sitting position.

1) Single Collar Bar Choke
Start by taking hold of the opponent’s right inside collar with your right hand and bear down with your forearm across the opponent’s throat and Adam’s apple. Next with your left hand, take the opponent’s left lapel. The choke is brought on by pulling down on the Gi with the left hand and pulling across and up with your right arm.

2) Double Collar Bar Choke
Start by inserting the left hand deep into the opponent’s left side collar, fingers inside. Next cross the right forearm over the left and take a similar deep grip inside the opponent’s right side collar also with the fingers inside. To bring the choke on, pull the grips together.

3) Double Hand Strangle
Start by taking hold of the opponent’s collar on both sides – thumbs inside, but not too deep and do not cross your arms. It is very important to find the exact spot for this grip since this strangle will not work if the grip is too deep or if it is too low down on the collar. To bring the strangle on, rotate your hands inwards so that the knuckles of both hands press into the neck.

4) Figure 4 Strangle
Start by sliding your left hand round the opponent’s neck and take hold. Next, take hold of your own left wrist with your right hand, and your forearm across the throat and Adam’s apple. The strangle is brought on by pulling the opponent’s head forward with your left hand and by pushing backwards with your right arm.

5) Single Hand Throat Crush
Take hold of the opponent’s right arm, then grasp the Adam’s apple and throat with your left hand, and crush the windpipe using your thumb and fingers either side of the Adam’s apple.

6) Rear Bar Choke With Wrist Lock
Defend a right punch with outside forearm block and move to the opponents’ rear. From behind, slide your right hand round the opponent’s neck to grip the left collar, thumb inside and slide the forearm under his chin. Step backwards and take the opponent down to the witting position. Bring on the choke with your forearm across the opponent’s throat and Adam’s apple. Finish by putting the opponent’s left arm into a wrist lock.

7) Rear Bar Choke
Continue from #6 by releasing the opponent’s left wrist lock and then reinforce the bar choke by placing your left hand onto the back of the opponent’s head and pushing forward.

8) Reverse Figure 4 Strangle
Starting from behind, fold your left arm right round the opponent’s neck so that it sits in the crook of the arm and grasp your own right bicep. The right arm then slips behind the opponent’s head with the palm of the hand on to the back of the head. To apply the strangle tense your arms and push forward with the right hand.

9) Rear Bar Choke And Straight Arm Lock
From behind, slide your right hand round the opponent’s neck to grip the left collar, thumb inside and slide the forearm under his chin. Bring on the choke with your forearm across the opponent’s throat and Adam’s apple. Finish by putting the opponent’s left arm into a straight arm lock.

10) Half Nelson
Starting from behind, take hold of the opponent’s left arm. Next slide your right hand under the opponent’s right armpit and round the back of their neck. Maintain control by pushing the neck and head forwards and finish by applying a straight arm lock to their left arm.

11) Full Nelson
Continue from #10 by releasing the left straight arm lock. Next slide your left hand under the opponent’s left armpit, round the back of their neck and link your fingers together. Maintain control by pushing the neck and head forwards.
