Judo Championships
Bredgar Village Hall – Sunday November 14th

Over recent years Judo has been on the decline and slowly but surely, the numbers participating in Judo Competitions has dropped. Rather then give up the IBF/BCSA has cut its cloth accordingly and instead of hiring large expensive halls with less people paying more we have started running smaller events in cheaper village halls this is our 4th event at Bredgar which is big enough for a competition area and has enough room for spectators. This time we had in access of 70 player’s maybe not the numbers of previous years but an improvement over the last 12 months. Some of the Judo was excellent and it was nice to see women competing again.

So why has Judo been in decline well it is not just Judo but all sports the reasons are many fold: Money being tight with many parents losing their jobs, Kids preferring to stay in doors on computers (note the recent report that rickets has reappeared) Political Correctness where competition in sport was discouraged, the introduction of a sackful of regulations with regard to sport and in the case of Judo new rules which bans a lot of Judo techniques and which most Judoka do not understand. The Young Judo Club are doing their best to help by dropping their prices for Juniors to £17.50p per month for 3 lessons a week, a Judo suit for every new beginners and a free Judo Lesson if a member introduces someone to the club

As I mentioned there were some really good fights 7 year old ANTON PAROCKI from Bedford was the most impressive he performed some excellent Uchi Mata’s (Inner Thigh Throw) this type of throw is very hard to perform well even Black Belts struggle, it was a personal favourite of mine and in all my career I have never seen somebody so young perform it so well, I was also proud of my grandson Lewis who also won a gold in a quite hard category. With my son John being forced to retire due to a knee injury I was very much in the dumps but Lewis has re invigorated me, it is a shame he only does it once a week I would love for him to train with me at Sambo on a Thursday night. John although retired from competition is very much involved in Coaching and 3 young lads under 16 years have moved up to the Senior Section and this group was for me the most enjoyable, they are Liam Allen, Sonny Tappin and Ben Franks , seeing young boys being turned into tough men always enthrals me, seeing the potential Black Belts who will be bring future glory to the Young Judo Club is very satisfying, The group they were in were evenly matched and the fighting was tough and they had learnt a lot with some of the wins being with strangles and arm locks things they are not allowed as juniors. In the older girls section Bedford Hellcats are back with a new group of girls but the winner of that group was Rowen Cullen who looked in excellent form trained by her father Drew at Bredgar she is one to watch for the future.

The new Judo Rules has deterred a lot of Judo Referees from continuing, so the for the whole day we had to rely on a single Referee Colin Carrott, I do not like the new rules and I will be running tournaments with different more Judo Friendly rules but we must have people refereeing the Olympic Standard rules if we want our Judoka to aspire to becoming Olympic Champions.

In March 2011 the Young Judo Club will be running a special Points Judo Championships at the Swallows, these types of Judo Rules give more opportunity for Judoka to practise their skills.
